About our region

Thurso is a small coastal town situated in the historical Highlands region of Scotland, and is the most northerly town on the mainland. Rich in Norse heritage, it is a fantastic place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and reconnect with a more traditional lifestyle.

Popular spots

John o' Groats. A popular destination for tourists, it is well-known for being 876 miles away from Land's End, which is the biggest distance between two points in the UK mainland.
Thurso Castle. Our local castle is a gothic-inspired building which has stood since the 19th century, with a long and interesting history going back to the 1100s.
Thurso beach. You can't beat a day at the beach! Our beach, coastal cafes and shops are a popular destination for families throughout the year, particularly in the summer.

Activities

Walks. Thurso's surrounding landscape is a walker's paradise. There are dozens of popular walking routes, as well as several off the beaten track. The wider surroundings of Caithness and Wick offer much for the outdoor explorer.
Surfing. Being near the coast, Thurso is a great spot to catch a wave or two! We are a popular destination for the surfing community, who can be seen along the shoreline most days.
